A Small Town Filling With New Lawns

Hydroseeding in Nolensville covers a lot of new yards for a town its size. Nolensville has grown steadily since it reincorporated in 1996, with developments like Bent Creek, Winterset Woods, Burkitt Place, Silver Stream, Ballenger Farms, Sunset Farms and Summerlyn built around the old town. Many of those names hint at what the land was before: farms.

Good soil, if you keep it

The story goes that William Nolen stopped here in 1797 when his wagon wheel broke, looked around and noticed the rich soil. That topsoil is the best thing a new lawn can have, but construction often strips it or buries it under subsoil. When we look at a new yard here, we check whether the topsoil was kept and spread back, or whether we are seeding into clay fill.

Mostly flat

The town covers about 10.4 square miles, all land, and is mostly flat with a few hilly areas. On flat lots the challenge is drainage, not slope. Yards that hold water after rain need some regrading before seeding, so the lawn does not drown in low spots. On the few hillier lots, standard slope protection applies.

Mill Creek

Nolensville was built along Mill Creek, which still runs through town. Lots that drain to the creek need silt fence during construction and grass established before the fence comes out.

Nolensville Questions

Water stands in my new backyard after rain. Should I seed anyway?

Fix the grade first. Grass in a low spot that stays wet will thin out. We can regrade and then seed.

How do I know if my builder left topsoil?

Topsoil is darker and crumbly; subsoil is often reddish, sticky clay. We dig a few spots during the site visit and show you.

Our lot backs onto Mill Creek. Anything special?

Keep a silt fence along the creek side until the grass is established, and do not leave the soil bare for long.

Is fall the best time to seed in Nolensville?

For fescue lawns, yes. Spring works with good watering, but fall gives the grass cooler weather to root.
