Growing Grass on Thin Soil
Hydroseeding in Lebanon runs into a soil problem that most places do not have. The city was named for the red cedars common in the area, and those cedars grow where they do because the soil is thin. South of town, Cedars of Lebanon State Forest is known for cedar glades, open areas where limestone bedrock is exposed or covered by only a skim of soil.
Why soil depth matters
In a glade, bare rock patches support nothing, gravelly spots carry only grasses, and very thin soil supports shrubs and small cedars. A lawn needs more than that. On Lebanon lots, especially in the flatter ground of the eastern Central Basin, we check how deep the soil is before seeding. Where rock is close to the surface, bringing in topsoil is often what makes the difference between a lawn and a weedy patch.
Water underground
The area is karst country. The limestone beneath it has weathered into joints, underground streams, caves and sinkholes, and much of the drainage moves underground before reaching creeks like Hurricane Creek and, eventually, Percy Priest Lake. When we grade a yard here, we avoid steering runoff into an open sinkhole and keep sediment out of any visible opening.
Native plants
The glades are home to some 350 plant species, 29 of them found only in cedar glades, including the Tennessee coneflower. Not every yard has to be all turf. Low-maintenance areas, banks and field edges can be seeded with native grasses or wildflowers where the owner wants that look.
Common Lebanon work
- Topsoil and seeding on rocky, thin-soil lots
- Hydroseed lawns in new neighborhoods
- Erosion control on banks and ditches
- Native grass seeding on field edges

Lebanon Soil and Rock
- Named for cedars. Lebanon is called Cedar City for the many eastern red cedar trees in the area.
- Cedar glades. Cedars of Lebanon State Forest, about 10 miles south, has glades where soil is thin or absent over limestone.
- Karst drainage. Limestone in the area has formed caves, sinkholes and underground streams, and water drains toward Hurricane Creek and Percy Priest Lake.
- Rare plants. The glades hold about 350 plant species, 29 of them endemic, including the Tennessee coneflower.

Lebanon Questions
Grass never grows in one part of my yard. Is it the soil?
In Lebanon, often yes. If there are only a few inches of soil over rock, grass dries out fast. Adding topsoil and reseeding usually fixes it.
There is a sinkhole near my lot. Can you still grade and seed?
Yes, but we do not direct runoff into it and we keep sediment out. Larger sinkholes may need an engineer to look first.
Can you seed native grasses or wildflowers instead of lawn?
Yes, on banks, field edges and low-traffic areas. It takes longer to fill in than turf but needs much less mowing.
Do red cedar stumps cause problems for a new lawn?
Large stumps and roots should be ground out and the hole filled with soil, or grass will be thin over them.
