Lawns That Run Down to the Lake

Hydroseeding in Hendersonville is often about what happens between a house and the water. The city sits on the north shore of Old Hickory Lake, and about 5.6 of its 32.9 square miles, close to 17 percent, is water. Many yards slope toward a cove or the main lake, and bare soil on those slopes goes straight into it when it rains.

How the lake shaped the town

Hendersonville was a small farming area and was not incorporated until 1969, when it had roughly 250 residents. What changed it was the Old Hickory Dam, finished in 1954. The lake drew sportsmen and second-home buyers, and the city went on to become the largest in Sumner County. A lot of the housing here was built with the lake in mind, which means a lot of sloped lots.

A steady water level

Old Hickory Lake covers about 22,500 acres at an elevation of 445 feet, and its water level changes very little, with a minimum pool of 442 feet. For a homeowner that means the shoreline edge stays in about the same place, so the zone just above it can be seeded and stabilized with a reasonable expectation that it will stay put. That stretch is where we put the heaviest protection: seed covered with bonded fiber matrix or erosion control blankets, and silt fence while work is under way.

Storm cleanup

In December 2023 a tornado caused major damage in Hendersonville. Rebuilding after storms leaves torn-up yards, rutted ground from equipment and stripped areas around new foundations. Hydroseeding is a practical way to re-cover large damaged areas once debris is gone and the grade is fixed.

What lakeside owners ask for

  • Erosion control on banks and drainage swales
  • New lawns after a rebuild or addition

Hendersonville Questions

Can you seed the slope right above my shoreline?

Yes. On those slopes we usually seed and then cover with an erosion control blanket, or use a bonded fiber matrix, so rain does not carry seed and soil into the lake.

Our yard was damaged in a storm. Where do we start?

Debris out first, then fill ruts and fix the grade, then seed. We can handle the grading and topsoil along with the hydroseeding.

Grass will not grow under our big trees near the lake. Can hydroseeding help?

Seed alone will not fix heavy shade. We can use a shade-tolerant mix and overseed, but very dense shade may need thinning of limbs or a different ground cover.

Do you put in silt fence for lakeside additions and pools?

Yes, we install silt fence downhill of the work and keep it in place until the new grass has rooted.
