From Farm Fields to Lawns

Hydroseeding in Gallatin often means turning former fields into lawns. The area stayed mostly agricultural until the middle of the 20th century, and much of today's housing sits on what was farm and pasture ground. The landscape mixes open fields, forest, hills and lakes, so one job may be a level former hayfield and the next a wooded hillside lot.

Station Camp Creek

Gallatin is located on Station Camp Creek, about three miles north of the Cumberland River, and Old Hickory Lake lies southwest of the city near Hendersonville. Construction near the creek or any of its branches needs silt fence on the downhill side and quick cover on disturbed soil. Ditches and swales that feed the creek are good candidates for erosion control blankets rather than seed alone.

When rain falls

Gallatin's heaviest average rainfall comes in March. If a site is graded in late winter, plan on temporary cover, either a quick-growing nurse crop in the seed mix or a mulch layer, so that bare soil is not exposed to the wettest part of the year. Permanent fescue seeding is often best timed for early fall.

Storm history

Tornadoes struck Gallatin in April 2006 and again in December 2023. After storms, yards often need debris cleanup, fill in ruts left by heavy equipment, and new grass across large areas. Hydroseeding covers that kind of ground quickly once the grade is right.

Typical work here

  • Converting old pasture into a hydroseed lawn
  • Seeding hilly, cleared lots after a new build

Gallatin Questions

Can old pasture be turned straight into a lawn?

Usually it needs work first: killing off weeds and pasture grasses, smoothing ruts and humps, and sometimes adding topsoil. Then we hydroseed.

We are building on a wooded hill. What happens after the trees are cleared?

Exposed hillside soil should be covered fast. We use hydromulch with tackifier, and blankets on the steepest parts, plus silt fence below.

Is late winter a bad time to grade in Gallatin?

It can be, since March is the wettest month on average. If you must grade then, put temporary cover down and plan permanent seeding for fall.

Do you help with storm-damaged lawns?

Yes, once debris is cleared we regrade, add soil where needed and seed.
