A Small River Town
Hydroseeding in Kingston Springs is shaped by the Harpeth River. Early settlers came here for the river and the local sulfur springs, and the first known settler, Lewis Dunn, set up near the river in 1807. The town later grew into a resort, with a hotel near the mineral springs built in 1819 and the Kingston Springs Hotel complex that is now on the National Register.
A river without dams
The Harpeth is one of the only undammed rivers in Tennessee, and in Cheatham County its course is very meandering. A free-flowing river like this rises quickly in storms and carries whatever washes into it. Lots near the river or its side streams need silt fence during any work, quick seeding, and blankets on banks or swales that carry water.
Protected stretches nearby
Downstream in Cheatham County, Harpeth River State Park links natural and historic sites along the lower river, including the Narrows of the Harpeth. Part of the lower Harpeth in Bellevue is designated a state scenic river. The river is also popular with canoeists. That is a lot of people relying on clean water, and keeping construction soil out of it is part of working here responsibly.
Small town, varied lots
Kingston Springs covers about 10 square miles and had 2,824 residents in 2020. Lots range from older homes near the historic center to wooded sites on higher ground. Wooded hillside lots that are cleared for building need fast cover on the exposed slope.

Kingston Springs Questions
Our yard slopes down to the Harpeth. How do we keep it from eroding?
Establish grass quickly, keep silt fence along the low edge until it roots, and use an erosion control blanket on the steepest part near the bank.
Can you work on wooded lots after clearing?
Yes. Cleared slopes get seed with a heavy mulch or bonded fiber matrix, plus silt fence below.
Does the river flood affect when you seed?
We avoid seeding low ground right before a likely high-water period and check the forecast before scheduling.
Can you overseed an older lawn in the historic part of town?
Yes, aeration and overseeding is often all an older lawn needs.
